First aid for dehydration due to diarrhea
Dehydration can happen in extremely hot temperatures or after strenuous activities like exercise. However, the most common cause of dehydration is vomiting and diarrhea.
- For an adult victim, give clear fluid such as juice, soda, sports drinks, or broth. Avoid dairy, alcohol, apple juice, and drinks with caffeine for at least 3-5 days until diarrhea subsides.
- For child and infant victims, give oral rehydration solution which you can get from the drug store. You can also make the solution at home with 1 liter of water, 8 teaspoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon if salt. Give 1 glass every four hours.
